96. Not My Jesus w/ Bob Fabey

Bob Fabey joins us to talk about his book "NotMyJesus: Embracing Our Sacred Role In a Changing World". Find out which image of Jesus you've been following. You should definitely check out his book. Also: How did Amy Grant (you heard me!) change his life? Why does he practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? What character from the Bible would he want to roll with?

Check him out at: bobfabey.com & his podcast "Third Space"

From the back cover: "Jesus had dreadlocks! Jesus had blue eyes. Jesus would never say THAT! Everyone claims to know something about Jesus. But they are likely incomplete. Jesus was judgmental! He called people names, and made fun of others! If you don’t know him this way, you should. Understanding who he is—and who he isn’t—is the key to knowing ourselves and how we are to live. Not My Jesus is a humorous, yet poignant look at faith, culture, and life. Using everything from movies to Tweets, Bob Fabey helps us to think about how we view Jesus, the strengths and weaknesses of each approach, and how we are called to live. In this book you will... • Identify the way you and others primarily view Jesus • Get a Biblical overview of who he really was (it’s not what you think!) • Discover the sacred role you play • Gain practical ways to live in light of who Jesus was Are you ready to confront your Jesus and embrace your sacred role?"

What about Bob? Bob Fabey is an Anglican priest with over 20 years of ministry experience with a variety of organizations. He holds a Master’s Degree in Divinity and a B.A. in History from the University of Montana.  You can find him speaking at retreats, conferences or in churches. He does workshops and keynotes. He has traveled extensively including Africa, Russia, and Central Asia. Bob has a deep passion to see Christians live according to their faith and speaks, mentors and writes to that end.

Bob resides in the greater Phoenix area. He loves to travel and hang out with is wife and kids, practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and drink large amounts of coffee.

We want to hear what you think!

Jeff and Zack run wild with Scooter being out of town and talk about praying against the Cali fire situation, why God won't heal Jeff's back, Zack continuing to struggle with prayer in general and how more than half of Christians don't know the Great Commission (including exactly half of the hosts on this episode). 93. Brandon Andress Returns! (Finding Peace in the Age of Outrage)

Brandon Andress joins us to talk about his excellent new book, "Beauty In The Wreckage: Finding Peace In The Age Of Outrage". Brandon is a prophetic voice for our time calling us to move beyond the "either or" & "in or out" mentality. Get into it and let us know what you think!

Beauty in the Wreckage is a profound and poetic book that explores: What it means to experience life to the fullest in the middle of so much pain and suffering, hostility and division, stress and anxiety. Moving beyond the labels, hierarchies, stereotypes, antagonisms, and divisions within our culture and society. The possibility of experiencing life to the fullest once you have been through painful and traumatic life situations or suffering. How the experience of shalom leads to a deeper life of transformation and invites us to become who we were always meant to be. How a deeply-rooted and intimately-connected community, or family, nourishes and strengthens us to experience greater depths of shalom. How the experience of shalom not only transform us individually and relationally, but also begins to transform our communities and our world.

92. Better Call Paul

We discuss Newspring Church (the one Perry Noble left) naming Jesus as their Lead Pastor. Also, somehow Dr. Laura comes up, we talk about mothers as breadwinners, Scott spoke at a wedding, and a piece in the Christian Post about Four Reasons To Read Your Bible that angers at least one of us. In addition, Zack is making me caveat (cue "Caveats!" soundbite) that the crude sexist joke he makes was intended to in fact make sexism look and sound stupid and ridiculous. But you be the judge. Also listener feedback!

91. Jamal Jivanjee is Living For A Living

Scott and Zack read some listener feedback right up top before being joined in studio (at 7:20) by author ("Free To Love" and the upcoming "Living For A Living") and podcaster ("The Love Cast" & "Heretic Happy Hour") Jamal Jivanjee. The product of a devout Catholic mother & devout Shiite Muslim father, Jamal has a fantastic story. Also we nerd out (and disagree) on the incarnation, near death experiences & find out what Jamal's New Jerusalem walk-in music is.

Social media anger management & Zack needs Scott's forgiveness. Plus, if you don't trust a news source does it mean you can't learn anything from what they're putting out?

80. The Truth vs. People Poll

We got some interesting feedback regarding a poll we took on Facebook and Twitter: "Truth matters more than people. Yes? No? Sometimes?" We talk about it (at 31:29). On Twitter 24% said "yes", 44% said "no" and 32% said "sometimes". On Facebook 25% said "yes" and 75% said "no". We read listener feedback from listeners and have a good convo about it.

Plus, Jeff reviews the movie "Come Sunday", Zack reviews the book "Gospel Of Self: How Jesus Joined the GOP" (at 20:41), and we give away 3 copies of Matthew Distefano's book "Heretic!" away (1:26:57)

78. De-Conversion Danger

In the first part of a one part series we discuss a blog post outlining the five steps of de-conversion that Jen Hatmaker, Rob Bell, Pete Enns and others allegedly utilize. We're of split opinions (per usual). Read the blog post referenced HERE. Also listener feedback.
